WORK

In 1648, the Church of England published the main articles of English protestant faith: and they became known as: ‘The Westminster Confession’.

The second of them says this: ‘The chief end of man, is to worship God, and to enjoy him for ever’.

PRAYER - SMUG OR SORRY

For a while, we are using themes suggested by Scripture Union. Today, we will be looking at: ‘Prayer – Smug or sorry’.

‘Smugness’ in prayer is made clear in one of Christ’s parables, at Luke 18.

HONOUR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER

Because English is a living language, and gradually changes: yesterday’s biblical meanings can become hidden, or even lost, within today’s usage.

Modern application of the word ‘honour’ can considerably alter much of the meaning of the biblical command to ‘Honour your father and mother’.

THE RICH YOUNG MAN

Let us to take brief looks at various aspects of today’s main text, at Matthew 19:16-30., and also consider the question that this week’s material poses: ‘Can you be rich, and be a Christian?’.

THE REALISTIC NATURE OF LOVE

What proportion of our lives is spent following the impersonal ‘what’ of things and systems; rather than the personal ‘who’ of God and his love?

ENDURANCE

The words 'endure' and 'endurance'; are often used negatively; as though their only meaning is that of putting up with things.

However, most dictionaries, and, certainly, the Bible, demonstrate other, positive meanings of these words. To 'endure' is something that we can do; actively; rather than something that we simply put up with, passively.

THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

Jesus Christ taught that his true followers could easily be distinguished from others; by observable, Spirit-directed, good change taking place in their lives.

Using a metaphor; he said: ‘A good tree cannot bear bad fruit; and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. By their fruit, you will recognize them'. (Matt. 7. 16-20).

THE UNBELIEVING HEART

Ask the average church-attending Christian ‘What are the two great commands of the Bible?, and how will they answer? How would we answer?

FAITH

In a world where change; both good and bad; takes place all the time; much faith is needed, in order to lead a steadfast, and effective, Christian life.

ASKING GOD ABOUT HIMSELF

In the 5th. chapter of his first ‘Letter', John writes: ‘This is the confidence that we have in approaching God, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us; in whatever we ask; we know that we have what we ask of him’.
